Luke 12.8-9
"I tell you this: everyone who acknowledges me before men, this son of Adam will acknowledge before the angels of God. But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God."
This seems like customary 1st-Century patron-client relations. Uphold my honor & I'll uphold yours. Only in a much loftier venue...
Or there might be a sort of karmic accounting perspective: Respect and be respected; despise & come to nothing?..
And the historical: As an anointed but unacknowledged king of Israel, Jesus lacks any sort of military backing, and has no hope of exercising his due authority without considerable public recognition. So far as his followers let themselves be inhibited by their neighbors' skepticism, his claim is weakened.
Or yet again: 'There's a revolution in human consciousness going on; you can join and benefit by it, or deny it and miss out.'
