KATA IOANNHN 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

John 1:1-5 (NRSV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

John 1:1-5 (NIV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

John 1:1-5 (AV1611)

Here's the first installment on the gospel of John. I tried to get the original Greek version in there too. Let me know if your browser can read it (I probably won't bother with the Greek too consistently -- I was just feeling pompous).

I've been looking forward to reading this gospel :-).

Is it really written by the apostle John? Why was he known of as "the disciple Jesus loved"?

Interesting difference of translations in the last line ...
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it ... or ... did not understand it.
