Amos 4.9-11

Proclaim to the strongholds in Assyria
and to the strongholds in the land of Egypt,
say, "Assemble yourselves upon the mountains of Samaria,
and see the great tumults within her,
and the oppression in her midst.

"They do not know how to do right," says the Lord,
"those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds."

Therefore, thus says the Lord God:
"An adversary shall surround the land,
and bring down your defenses from you,
and your strongholds shall be plundered."

Nice, simple, karmic cause&effect.

"oppression in her midst" == "great tumults within her", which all comes down to 'storing up violence and robbery in our midst.'

This sort of weakness leads to a nation being plundered. It's like those confidence games in which the real swindler tells the mark, 'We can make some money off that guy there.' So that the mark gets plundered while he thinks he's moving up into the 'oppressor' class...

Lots of analogous activities going on in many nations, recently-- with the US imagining that our ruling crooks can keep on fleecing everyone indefinitely-- and will go on sharing the loot with the general US population, as they used to do. ("Richest country in the world," people used to say... as if having the loot was evidence that 'We haven't stolen nuthin and nobody can prove it.')

And now...? Maybe we could just change our ways?
