Luke 18.15-17

Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.

But Jesus called them to him, saying "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.

"Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it."

This is a kingdom of people without honor, status, dignity. "A kingdom of nobodies" as JD Crossan puts it.

This saying, in Mark 9.33, is likewise placed where Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem to die, while the disciples are speculating on who will rank highest in his coming regime.

In incident after incident-- People who have little or no place in their society are welcoming Jesus, while anyone with anything to lose is likely to be at least suspicious, at worst trying to discredit him.

No dignity. No concern with personal honor or status.

A reporter wrote about seeing a young man in India, sitting beside the road in rags.

"You're an American, aren't you?" the reporter asked.

"No, man, I'm nobody."

The reporter thought this was very sad.
