according to mark 3:13-19

Jesus chooses the twelve apostles

3:13-19 Later he went up on to the hill-side and summoned the men whom he wanted, and they went up to him. He appointed a band of twelve to be his companions, whom he could send out to preach, with power to drive out evil spirits. These were the twelve he appointed: Peter (which was the new name he gave Simon), James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother (He gave them the name of Boanerges, which means the "Thunderers".) Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew,Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Patriot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Simon the Patriot. I never noticed that one before. My NRSV says Simon the Cananaean. My New Jerusalem says: Simon the Zealot which I guess is more familiar. It raises questions about how many of Jesus' lot were committed to violent revolution and just how much of an uphill battle it may have been to convince them that there might be an alternative to terrorism. But I can't really get behind the text violating the interpretative stance I took earlier.

I also notice how many folks get nick names. The first Simon becomes Peter. James and John become the Sons of Thunder. The second Simon gets Patriot. Judas becomes Iscariot.

People who've compared lists (from various gospels) say they don't agree.

All that is agreed on: The number is 12.

12 tribes, 12 assistants to administer "justice". Not "justice" like "time for the crime," justice like "Shalom." Everyone under his own fig tree, the goyim behaving themselves, no one charging his brother interest or snatching the family farm as colateral.

This is political, folks!

Not perfect agreement but not totally differnet either:

Matthew 10:2-4 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.

Mark 3:16-19 So he appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder);and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Luke 6: 13-16 And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles:Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
